HP and Altkin join forces for the SecuReuse programme
On May 15, HP has announced at a conference in Brussels organized by "The Recycler", Altkin as a partner for the SecuReuse program, an initiative designed to extend the life of print cartridges by enabling chip upgrades for optimal compatibility of remanufactured cartridges.
What is the HP SecuReuse Program ?
It's a program that encourages the development of remanufactured HP printing consumables, and therefore their reuse for perfect compatibility between remanufactured cartridges and HP printers. This program enables HP chips to be reset for up to 5 cartridge uses. In summary, remanufactured cartridges with an OEM chip.
Why this program ?
As part of the European Ecodesign Work Plan, and in support of the EU Circular Economy Action Plan (CEAP), HP is now promoting an environment conducive to the reuse of its cartridges in Europe. This initiative will extend the life cycle of printer cartridges and provide an industrial process enabling remanufacturers to make the SecuReuse program accessible.
A turning point in the print cartridge remanufacturing industry
How does it work?
Through this partnership, HP enables ALTKIN to reset the chips of remanufactured inkjet and laser cartridges. This means they can be reset to be fully compatible with HP printers (no more error messages, ink and toner level management, no impact from software updates).
When will it be available ?
The solution is due to be deployed in Europe in 2025.
End user benefits
There are many advantages. Cartridges with a SecuReuse chip will have exactly the same functionality as the original version. This greatly enhances the user experience:
- No confusing messages when installing the cartridge in the printer
- Ink and toner level management (ILM) enabled
- No impact of software updates
- HP Security features preserved
- Works with fleet management tools / MPS Ready
- Works with HP+ printers
Finally, remanufactured cartridges will retain the HP logo on the cartridge for greater customer reassurance !
Market benefits
In detail:
- Reduced time-to-market: cartridges incorporating the program will be immediately available when HP launches a new printer
- Clear functional and visual differentiation between new and remanufactured cartridges
- Remanufacturers can build their own reset solution and integrate it into their production lines
- Each new reference will require a software update
- Reset only works for empty European cartridges
- Up to 5 chip resets
- No dependence on a third-party chip supplier
- No risk of intellectual property infringement for the chip
- No chip inventory or volume forecasting
This is an important signal for the remanufactured market, as it represents a paradigm shift for HP, which until now has recommended the use of original consumables, often citing the lower performance of remanufactured alternatives. With SecuReuse, HP will make it possible to distinguish "reman" cartridges from clones, or any other non-HP cartridges.
